Living and working as an au pair in Europe

We provide a free service to all au pair applicants contacting us direct. We also work with contact agencies abroad.

The au pair programme gives you an excellent opportunity to practise and perfect the language of the country where you will be living. You will also learn something about the customs and culture of another European country.

Facts about being an Au Pair

As an au pair, you will live for a time as a member of the family in exchange for doing some light housework e.g. vacuuming, dusting, ironing, light washing and helping with the preparation of meals. You will also help look after the children e.g. getting the children up and dressed, giving them breakfast, taking them to and collecting them from school, cooking simple meals, entertaining them and helping with bath and bedtime.

Your own room plus meals will be provided free by the host family.

You will normally have time off during the day to attend a language class and work for a maximum of 30 hours a week plus 2-3 evenings a week baby-sitting.

Before going to a European country, you should ideally be able to speak a certain amount of the language in order to converse with the parents and children although some families may be fluent English speakers and happy to accept a girl who only speaks English.

Travel Costs

You will be responsible for paying your own fare to and from the country as well as any school fees should you decide to attend language classes.

Finding a Family

Once, we have received your completed application form, we will start to find you a suitable family and usually work with our contact agencies in the country which you have selected.

A copy of the families details will then be sent to you and you should let us know immediately whether or not you would like to accept the family. Once you have agreed to join a family, you will need to make the necessary travel arrangements and contact us with the date, place and time of arrival.

On arrival in your country of destination, your host family will meet you, as agreed, either at the airport or train station.

Good luck and best wishes from Marcia Delaney.
